On August 15 is celebrated the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. In Greece, it is pompously celebrated in many parts around the country, and it is also called “Easter in the summer.”
In Amorgos Island, whose patroness is the Holy Mother (Hozoviotissa), the biggest festival of August is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. There are several churches in Amorgos in Her name, but certainly, the first among them is the Virgin Mary “Epanochoriani” in Langada of Aegiali. A point of reference for all the Amorgian wherever they may live. The feast starts on the 14th in the evening, and offers a perfect opportunity to walk to this beautiful place enjoying sunset. In the mountains and only 15mn by feet from the village of Lagada (very easy walk), “Epanochoriani” church has very ancient roots and a rich history.
This festival is also famous for the communal meal where local specialties are served. After the church ceremony on the 14th of August, one can then discover the “revythia” (chickpea) & “kofto” (kind of porridge). On the 15th morning, “patatato” (goat with potatoes), “ksidato”, and the “legendary” psimeni raki of Amorgos are served.
A very traditional and small “kafeneio” will welcome you on the left side on the church to enjoy the warm atmosphere of the celebration and meet all Amorgian people.
Some people are still going there on their donkey, you can take very nice pictures from the donkey parking…
On both nights, traditional Greek music is played in the whole village until early in the morning and people are dancing all night long.
A good opportunity to meet Amorgos traditions and learn some of the Greek dances’ steps!
