On Saturday 9th of October 2010 was held an amazing religious event on the island. Over 300 people from Amorgos were gathered in the church of Tholaria to accompany the future newly weds. The particularity of this event lay in the fact that the Archbishop in person, as well as several other important ecclesiastical personalities, was present for this wedding. As a result, the ceremony was exceptionally colourful and solemn.
The mayor and all notorious personalities of the island were present. The groom, preceded by violinists arrived first, followed by his family and friends. For the occasion, everyone present had worn their best clothes and the girls and ladies were perched on their highest heels. Even though it was a rather chilly day, everyone cheered and waited impatiently for the bride who finally appeared in here beautiful white gown, escorted by her very caring father. Here too the violinists opened the way.
The ceremony was held in the beautiful church of Tholaria which was lit up and profusely decorated. The presence of the Archbishop gave the event an indescribable feeling of mysticism. The elderly ladies of the village covered with their traditional “mandili” scarf were perched on the balcony watching the ceremony in approbation.
The Archbishop held a speech to the young couple before concluding. Then followed the congratulation procession and the explosion of many fire crackers.
Dinner for all was served in the very nice “Vigla” hotel and lasted until the next day. Festivities ended Sunday night when finally exhaustion took over.
A remarkable week-end on Amorgos!
